The Challenge

The vision for the Experience Center, located on a corporate campus in San Jose, California, was a space of immersion and innovation, surrounding guests with the latest audiovisual solutions for a sensory- rich experience.

Designed to support a range of events and branding, the location would boast an expansive array of stunning content presentations and programming to inspire employees and customers alike. The entry was to be flanked by massive video walls leading to an even more spectacular curved wall with floor-to-ceiling projection and LED video walls. The goal was to enable the end-user to switch between using the entire wall as a single immersive video wall or as two distinct video systems, with the projectors as one source and the LED walls as another.

Bringing this concept to reality required Avidex’s expertise in projection mapping and image blending. Precision in installing the projectors and screens was critical to create a seamless canvas on the curved walls and video screens.

The Solution

Before entering the Experience Center, visitors first encounter a large 4.0 pixel pitch 346" diagonal Samsung video wall, primarily used for marketing and promotions. A smaller 1.2 pixel pitch 146" diagonal Samsung video wall greets visitors upon entry. On each side of the entryway, two Epson projectors deliver floor-to-ceiling images that connect with the interior imagery.

Inside, the space is dominated by a floor-to-ceiling curved canvas featuring seamless projection that wraps around the back of the room. This uninterrupted image is created by a total of five 12K lumen Epson projectors. Additionally, two 1.56 pixel pitch curved LED Nanolumens video walls are installed along the wall, meticulously integrated with the projectors. This setup allows the video walls the flexibility to be part of the video canvas — providing one uninterrupted immersive surface — or to be used independently. An Analog Way Aquilon C 4K/8K multi-screen presentation system and video wall processor handle the video wall graphics.

Executing the multi-display canvas required Avidex’s project management team to maintain constant communication during construction. This involved coordination not only with engineering and technology manufacturers but also with the building’s HVAC, electrical, and other contractors.

“Every pixel had to be accounted for to ensure alignment, so it was imperative the projectors were installed in very specific locations — even a couple of inches could throw off the entire image. There was a high level of coordination during the construction process to ensure there weren’t any obstructions during the final install.”
— Mike Simoni, Senior Project Manager, Avidex

Once the room was constructed, Avidex’s engineering team went to work defining the pixel pitch and projection mapping, requiring significant onsite engineering and testing. They used a single projector in a mockup to confirm the overlap and calculations before securely installing all five projectors.

In addition to the canvas wall, a 1.5 pixel pitch 260" diagonal Samsung video wall on the opposite wall is used primarily for presentations. Audio is delivered by Community Professional ceiling speakers and subwoofers painted to blend in with the ceiling.

The Outcome

What was once only a concept is now a reality. The Experience Center offers an immersive multi-sensory experience, engaging users with a digital canvas and multiple video walls that can be used together or separately. Avidex brought its years of engineering and project management expertise to the project, realizing the meticulous integration of projectors, video walls, video processors, and ceiling speakers.

“This is a great example of how wild organizations can get when they want technology to be a major feature of a space. It showcases the trending DXD architectural style that puts media graphics and technology at the forefront of the environment.”
