The Hive: Spokane's Self-service Hub for Hybrid Collaboration and Community Learning
The Hive is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Spokane Public Library and Spokane Public Schools, an education and arts innovation center where creativity, technology, and community intersect. Unlike a traditional library, The Hive has no books to check out. Instead, it’s a fully self-service facility that offers free, high-quality meeting and training spaces to residents, educators, and artists across the region.
Project Overview
When designing The Hive, the City of Spokane wanted technology that matched the facility’s modern vision: systems that were powerful enough for hybrid collaboration, yet simple enough for anyone to use without assistance. Each space needed to support in-person and virtual events seamlessly, ensuring that community groups and educators could connect from anywhere.
SPL partnered with Avidex to deliver a standardized, easy-to-operate audiovisual environment that empowers every visitor, whether they’re hosting a creative workshop, a remote training, or a civic meeting.

        Challenge: A Self-run Space
The Hive was envisioned as a self-service building with minimal on-site staffing. As such, every system—from microphones to video conferencing—had to be highly reliable and intuitive enough for first-time users.
The challenge was twofold: create advanced hybrid meeting spaces that could handle complex collaboration needs and design them so that any community member could walk in and operate the system with ease.
Due to the complexities of the public bid environment, where early design documents can lack the full details, and COVID-era product shortages required real-time problem-solving during construction.
The Solution:
To meet SPL’s goals, Avidex deployed a standardized, scalable AV solution across The Hive’s five meeting and training spaces. Each room was designed with a consistent user experience while accommodating varying room sizes and configurations.
During installation, Avidex engineers and field staff provided ongoing coordination with contractors to adapt the system design and maintain project timelines despite shifting conditions and material delays.

Solutions for Every Space
At The Hive, simplicity drives the user experience. Every meeting and training space features an Avidex-designed Crestron touch interface that allows guests to launch presentations or hybrid sessions with just a tap. The interface serves as the control hub for each room, automating behind-the-scenes functions like input selection, display routing, and lighting presets so users never have to troubleshoot complex settings. Whether a visitor needs to share a presentation, start a Zoom meeting, or adjust the room volume, the interface guides them through the process clearly and consistently across all five spaces.
This consistency was critical for a self-service facility like The Hive—one that operates without full-time technical staff. The standardized interface design eliminates confusion between rooms and ensures that even first-time users can navigate the system confidently. As a result, library patrons, educators, and business guests alike enjoy the same professional-grade AV experience without requiring on-site support.

Audio clarity is essential to a successful hybrid environment, especially in large, flexible spaces that host community meetings and creative workshops. Avidex addressed this by deploying a Q-SYS audio processing platform integrated with Shure beamforming microphone arrays to deliver consistent coverage and natural sound quality throughout each room. The beamforming microphones automatically focus on active speakers while minimizing background noise, allowing every voice to be heard clearly—whether participants are in the room or joining remotely.
The Q-SYS core manages signal routing, equalization, and echo cancellation across all systems, giving The Hive’s event and training spaces the same intelligibility expected in professional conference centers. Even when multiple rooms are combined for larger gatherings, the audio design scales seamlessly to maintain clarity and balance. The result is a high-fidelity, hands-off audio experience that enhances communication, engagement, and accessibility for every user.

Because The Hive serves a diverse mix of users—from teachers and small business owners to nonprofit groups—Avidex prioritized BYOD flexibility as a core part of the AV design. Each space allows guests to connect their own laptops or devices directly into the room’s system, instantly accessing displays, cameras, and microphones without needing special software or administrative credentials. This plug-and-play setup supports all major conferencing platforms, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, giving users the freedom to collaborate on the tools they already know.
Behind the scenes, Avidex’s integration ensures that BYOD connections trigger the correct input routing, audio configurations, and display settings automatically. Users simply plug in and present—no technical assistance required. This flexibility not only expands The Hive’s accessibility for public use but also maximizes room utilization, allowing back-to-back meetings and events to transition quickly while maintaining a polished, professional experience for every guest.
